History of Yellowstone National Park. Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is America's first national park. Native American Indians have inhabited the region for more than 11,000 years, and Yellowstone contains more than 1,000 archeological sites. Unknown to the Lewis and Clark Expedition of the early 1800s, the area was not explored until the late 1860s.
